After working with law firm partners for years, three things that stand out:
- There are many accomplished partners who, for example, can run billion-dollar transactions or massive multi-district litigations but are understandably inexperienced when it comes to moving law firms.
- Too often these sophisticated partners get lured in by unsophisticated legal recruiters who turn out to be a hindrance (and sometimes obstacle) to the process.
- By the time these partners figure out the important nuances, they kick themselves for not having learned – at the outset – how to thoughtfully approach the market in a way that maximizes their marketability while also protecting their confidentiality.
The problem? There are very limited publicly available options to learn about this intricate world of lateral partner movement.
Over 10 years ago, I purchased the lateralpartners.com domain name with the goal of creating a comprehensive website to address this knowledge gap. But once I owned the domain name, I was invariably busy with my practice and had difficulty finding the time to create this website.
Every two years, I paid money to re-register the domain name and kicked myself with guilt. “I really should create that site.” But no action and more guilt.
This year, however, I was motivated to finally carve out the time to draft the content.
So, I’m excited to announce the launch of lateralpartners.com.
It’s divided into eight sections, depending on where you are in the process:
- Should You Move?
- Legal Recruiters for Lateral Partners
- Preparing Your Materials
- Entering the Market
- Interviewing/Due Diligence
- Lateral Partner Compensation
- Offers and Negotiation
- Acceptance and Giving Notice
In addition to articles, I will also include industry news, interviews with industry leaders, and will continue adding and updating content.
Thank you to my Garrison & Sisson partners Justine Donahue and Nancy Palermo for the second pairs of eyes on the articles.
I hope you all enjoy learning from it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
